Second the vote...
Look into flexible spending accounts for health care or child care. I don't have many medical expenses, but I still open one the year when I'm buying new glasses. Saved a $100 or so! Warning: they do add to the paperwork, so they're not for the disorganized and not worth the work for someone with really few medical costs.

My employer's Flexible Spending Account program allows to avoid paying taxes on expenses that we wouldn't be able to deduct on our returns.

I hope you don't mind, but I've tagged you for Priscilla Palmer's Personal Development List (http://chieffamilyofficer.blogspot.com/2007/09/personal-development-list.html).

A couple of states and the District of Columbia will be holding additional tax holidays in a few months. Virginia and Georgia will exempt energy efficient products; D.C.'s second no-tax event will be similar to its August one, just timed for holiday shopping. Details in this post: http://dontmesswithtaxes.typepad.com/dont_mess_with_taxes/2007/07/attention-tax-f.html
