The one thing that has worked for us is minimizing the number of stops on the way for long trips - ideally, stop for gas re-fills only and it takes a bit of conditioning...

[...] My family and I were in Atlanta this weekend for my daughter’s gymnastics competition. (She won all-around for her age and level!) I did really well with my eating - I was ‘forced’ to eat fast food just once - and we had a great time. I’ve found that I do best when I plan ’several-meals-ahead’. Over at No Credit Needed, I wrote a post about our preparations for the trip.
The one thing that gets us every time we drive anywhere (we don't drink soda) is bottled water. We seem to go through GALLONS of the stuff whenever we stay in hotels. And for some reason, for a long time we were buying it when we arrived instead of getting it in whatever cheap shop near home and putting it in the car. Crazy.
