Ask for discounts, particularly with small businesses. I have obtained many discounts by asking “Do you have a pre-payment discount?” Most businesses have agreed to at least a 5% discount for up-front payment. This is along the lines of asking “Is that your best price?” which also often yields a discount, particularly if you do not need all of the options that are presented.

freecycle.org has been a big money saver for our family. Free swing-set, free computer equipment, free children’s clothes, free firewood, free television…that’s just a few of the things we’ve received. It’s a great system to keep stuff out of the landfill, and the prices can’t be beat!
It is also great for getting those cluttery things out of your house without paying for disposal.

Use retailers price matching policies to save on the items you are looking to buy. Very rarely do people use these policies that the stores promote. Circuit City and Staples are two companies that are aggressive in this area.

One thing that has helped me a lot in the past is dividing my paycheck (using direct deposit) into 2 different accounts. I used to deposit 25% of the paycheck into another account that I would not touch at all. It was a savings account. This was my way of forcing myself to only live on 75% of the paycheck.
