The Tax Foundation

I was researching my state’s income tax rates, and I stumbled upon this very interesting site.  The Tax Foundation is a well organized, easy to navigate, tax information resource.  If you are interested in your state’s income, property, or sales taxes, you can find all of that information at The Tax Foundation.  It looks like they produce a blog and a podcast.  I’ve just discovered this resource and will probably spend some time exploring it.  One interesting article?  The Tax Foundation reports on which Congressional districts pay the highest federal income taxes.  This is a great resource for anyone looking to do research about taxes.

Filing My Taxes

Today I’ll begin the process of filing my income taxes.  I’m printing out copies of last year’s return, organizing my various documents, and searching for a free place to file.  If I find out that I have to pay additional taxes, I’ll wait until April to actually file my return.  If I find out that I’m going to get a refund, I’ll file my taxes immediately.  I hope I’ve managed to withhold just enough so that I either owe a very small amount or get a very small refund.  I’d hate to know that I’d given the IRS an interest-free loan this year.  For those of you who get major refunds this year, change your withholdings!  You’ll have more money each month.

The No Credit Needed Podcast will be hosting next week’s Carnival of Debt Reduction.  The NCN Podcast is celebrating it’s one year of existence.  If you would like to submit an article, please follow this link and submit via Blog Carnival.  If you are new to podcasting or blog carnivals, let me give you a little additional information:

Podcasting:  A podcast is simply a digital audio file (usually an mp3 file) that you can “stream” to your computer or download to your computer.  The great thing about a podcast is (in addition to being able to stream the individual audio files) you can subscribe to the podcast feed, using a program like iTunes, and have the audio files automatically downloaded to your computer.  If you have a portable mp3 player (like an Ipod or Sansa) you can transfer the audio files to your player, and take the podcast with you.  If you have any questions about how to listen to podcasts, or how to subscribe to them, use my contact form to send me an emal!

Blog Carnival:  A blog carnival is simply a collection of posts from an assortment of bloggers which have been compiled, organized, and featured at one particular blog.  Popular personal finance related carnivals (or festivals) include, but are not limited to, the Carnival of Debt Reduction, the Carnival of Personal Finance, and the Festival of Frugality.  The carnivals are hosted at a different site every week.

IRS Free File Information

The IRS (in partnership with the Free File Alliance) provides links to various companies which provide free electronic tax filing.  Here’s a summary of the free file information.  For all of the information, please click this link to go to the IRS site.

Summary:

Since 2003, 15.4 million people have used Free File.

Free File allows people with AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) of less than 52K to file for free.

70 percent of Americans qualify for Free File.

Free File covers your FEDERAL tax return.  Some companies charge for state returns.  Some offer free state returns.  Check each site for details.

You are NOT required to purchase additional products from the companies providing this FREE service.

Most companies require that you access their sites via the Free File link at the IRS site, in order to qualify for Free File services.

Last year I used this service, and it worked like a charm.  Click around, research the companies, and save a little money!
