100 Comments Series Part 1

Today This weekend, I am going to leave 100 comments for my personal finance friends. I will leave the comments at their sites, and I will publish the comments here. You will have to click the various links to read their original posts, so that you will understand the context of my comments. I will begin with the blogs on my blog-roll, then I will move on to various members of the NCN Network, and then I will leave comments on various personal finance blogs. (Some blogs have comment moderation activated, so the comments may not show up immediately.)

Comments 1 – 10

1. Hi 2Million,

Isn’t it ironic that credit card companies have so much power to simply CHANGE the terms of their reward programs. Bait and switch, bait and switch!

4. Ask Uncle Bill,
I’ve thought about opening my own small-town restaurant, but right now I don’t have the cash. So, I’m spending my time LEARNING all of the details of owning my own business. I will not jump in head first. I’m going to educate myself first.

Thanks for your blog,
NCN

5. Bank Deals,
A quick note of thanks for keeping up with all of these rates. I’m seriously thinking of moving most of my money from ING, if they don’t get with the program soon.

Your site totally rocks,

You could always sell one of the kids to pay for the other kids’ stuff…

Seriously, if I invite ANYONE to go out and eat, I pick up the tab…
And I expect the same from my friends…

I LOVE this post. If people ever “get” the fact that even a small amount applied to a loan can have a major impact, they can begin to change their financial futures.

If EVERY Day Where Like Today…

Wow. What an awesome, awesome day. I think that today was one of the best days of my life. Here’s what I did:

Woke up about 7 AM to hang out with my son. My wife went to work and my little girl went to school, leaving me and little buddy at home for the day. I made pancakes for him (but he ended up eating fruit loops with milk) and we played blocks and Lego’s. My son is 2 1/2, so I’m still the “man” in his eyes. At about 9:30, we went outside. My son has one of those little John Deere electric jeep things, so he rode around the yard for about 20 minutes, while I raked up several piles of leaves. (I was listening to The Overnightscape on my Ipod Shuffle…) The weather was absolutely perfect. 80 degrees, a little breeze, nice sunny skies. Awesome. Little buddy then helped me pick up the leaves and carry them to the compost pile. Next, at about 11:00, we headed to the backyard to play on the swing set, eat pretzels, and drink our ice cold Mountain Dew (diet for me…). Little buddy likes the swing, but he REALLY likes to slide. After about an hour of playing in the backyard, we went inside for lunch. I cooked us a frozen pizza (I know, I know… junk food… but it’s a special day, so back off…) For dessert, we each had a small bag of M&M candies. At 1:00, we both laid down to take naps. He snuggled up close to me and fell asleep with his back to mine. I slept until about 2:00 to do some routine blog posting and Internet stuff, and then I downloaded a few more podcasts to listen to later. Little buddy woke up about 2:45, and we colored Sesame Street coloring sheets until 3:30 when Mommy and Little sister got home. Little sister gave me a big, big happy hug, and we sat for the next 30 minutes, and talked about school, gymnastics, and her friends. Mommy, Little buddy and Little sister packed up and headed out at about 5:00 for gymnastics’ practice, and left me home, to clean up the house and prepare supper. I decided to fix my favorites! I cooked fried chicken, fresh butter beans, mashed potatoes, and homemade cornbread. (I’m from the South…) I was able to check out a few TIVO’ed episodes of “Good Eats”, “The Colbert Report”, and “Mad Money”. Mommy and the kids got home around 8:00, had their baths, and they are all now in bed. I have the Florida St. vs NC State football game on “pause” and I’m updating my blog. I’ve got a full belly, a comfortable, clean home, a wonderful wife, and 2 precious kids… No matter how much money you manage to make, save, or acquire… You’d never be able to purchase a day like the day I had today.

Counting my blessings…

What Happens If I Keep Up This 20,000 Dollar A Year Thing

Even though I am a little behind in my savings goal, I feel really confident that I will manage to save at least 20K in my emergency fund by the end of the year. So, I got to thinking… What would happen if I saved 20K EVERY YEAR, at various rates, for 10 years. Here’s what I figured out…

(I used the calculator located here at DinkyTown to calculate my answers.)

20K Per Year @ 4% For 10 Years= 250,766 dollars

20K Per Year @ 5% For 10 Years= 265,866 dollars

20K Per Year @ 6% For 10 Years= 282,090 dollars

20K Per Year @ 7% For 10 Years= 299,529 dollars

WOW! As you can see the rate of return can have a BIG influence on the balance, especially as time goes by! (I used a VERY simplified calculation for these amounts, entering a 20,000 dollar annual contribution, with interest compounding monthly. Amounts will vary depending on the time of contribution and how often interest is compounded. ING compounds interest DAILY and credits interest MONTHLY.)

If you are looking for an AWESOME resource which lists current rates from various banks, check out Bank Deals.
